Making complex telecom B2B order flows responsive and reliable

We helped a telecom company develop its B2B online store to bring clarity, reliability, and control to its complex order flow. For end customers, the updated service provides accurate, real-time visibility into order status throughout the process.

Challenge

When a customer makes a purchase in an online store, the visible transaction represents only a fraction of the picture – multiple systems are involved in fulfilling the order, from product, pricing, and campaign management to shopping carts, inventory, and CRM integrations.

Our customer had all of these stitched together with solutions built incrementally over a long period of time. This made even small changes slow and risky due to tangled implementations, duplicated business logic, growing complexity, and limited visibility into how orders progressed across systems. All of this caused challenges for customers to comprehend whether the system was still processing their action, was temporarily unavailable, or had completed the request successfully.

Solution

The checkout and delivery process spans multiple backend systems, where each step is critical, and failures can occur at any point. To manage this complexity and inevitable uncertainty, we modelled the order flows, including failure scenarios and recovery paths. This made the process explicit and easier to understand, implement, and evolve.

The resulting order flows were implemented using a state-based approach, where each order progressed through clearly defined states. Transitions between states were based on user actions and system events. The state-machine approach brought greater transparency and control to the process by enabling real-time order status tracking, graceful error handling, and reliable processing with minimal manual intervention.

The same transparency extends to end customers, who can see the exact status of their order in the online store while the underlying business logic remains in the backend.

The project was delivered in close collaboration across a multi-vendor team, combining deep telecom expertise with detailed knowledge of the existing system landscape.

Results

The online store and ordering are now more responsive, reliable, and transparent. For end customers, the service provides accurate, real-time visibility into order status throughout the process. Operators can monitor, manage, and control order flows in real time.

The system recovers gracefully from temporary failures without manual intervention, improving operational reliability and reducing the need for manual recovery efforts.

At the same time, the service has maintained and further improved its already high customer satisfaction (CSAT).
