Challenge

Oima focuses on simplifying the management of employment and assignment relationships in the care sector. They combine strong technological expertise and real-time data with deep knowledge of the care industry. The Oima service brings together the management of personal assistance, family, and informal care into a single platform, providing complete visibility into operations and allowing agile management that involves caregivers. At the time of writing (8/2025), Oima accounts for more than 800.000 hours of care delivered each month.

Key components of Oima's digital solutions needed to migrate from Telia Cloud 9 to Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Ensuring a smooth cloud migration and continuity of services for Oima's customers was a business-critical goal. The existing hosting environment was scheduled for sunsetting, which introduced a strict deadline for completing the migration successfully.

Oima set out to find a partner who could help them tackle the migration challenge at hand while speeding up their internal GCP and Terraform expertise development. In the long term, their goal is to make the most out of the target platform's advanced capabilities in order to provide market-leading services to their end customers.

Solution

Oima partnered with Asteroid due to our solid experience with similar cases in the past, and our commitment to help Oima succeed with their unique needs.

Already before agreeing on the partnership and kicking off the main migration project, we promptly arranged a few mini workshops. In the workshops, we analyzed the starting point, goals, and constraints in order to draft a target architecture and project approach. We used our systematic, experience-backed migration strategy blueprint to speed up the efforts while tailoring it to Oima's specific context.

Next, we laid out a more detailed migration plan and worked on the project in close collaboration with Oima’s specialists and business stakeholders. The selected migration strategy used re-platforming, lift-and-shifting, and retaining of the services – while considering the risks and constraints at hand and prioritizing efforts for the highest possible impact. Additionally, we created a future development roadmap to make the most out of GCP in the long term.

The target architecture was based on GCP (e.g., Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, Cloud Pub/Sub), Terraform, GitHub, and AWS for certain parts of the existing architecture tactically scoped out of the initial migration phase, for example, Route53.

The collaboration model used agile methodology, with close collaboration taking place continuously so that the customer was always front and center.

Results

We completed the migration successfully while following a strict schedule with resource constraints. We also ensured high availability of the service throughout the live deployments, which allowed Oima’s customers to focus on their important care work without interruptions.

According to the migration strategy, the target systems were re-hosted and partially modernized, taking advantage of GCP's cloud-native capabilities to make the service smoother and more efficient to operate.

Through close collaboration with Asteroid, Oima became self-sufficient in developing and operating custom digital services on GCP. To ensure success beyond the migration, we equipped Oima with a prioritized future development backlog. Our goal is to be a trusted technology partner who is able to continue the collaboration whenever the need arises.

The project was a success, and we’ll be happy to rely on Asteroid also for our future needs.”
