eSett
Helping eSett ensure smooth operation of Nordic electricity markets
Summary
eSett is responsible for imbalance settlement in the Nordic electricity markets, and operates in a highly regulated, business-critical environment. Asteroid served as a technical advisor to eSett's management and specialists. The objective has been to ensure that future investments are strategically justified, technically sustainable, and deliver tangible value to market participants.
Challenge
Information systems and data are at the core of eSett’s operations. eSett actively develops their digital services, data exchange solutions, and cloud environments to increasingly align with both its own strategic objectives and the evolving needs of their customers and stakeholders.
Alongside their strong in-house expertise, they need a technology partner that is able to bring in innovative thinking and technical expertise – combined with a thorough understanding of how electricity markets operate and eSett's pivotal role in ensuring security of supply at the heart of it all.
The extensive collaboration between eSett and Asteroid has encompassed the following interconnected challenges, among others:
Creating a vision and roadmap for next-generation data exchange solutions
Planning the modernization of digital channels
Developing logging and monitoring policy as part of eSett’s cloud governance model
Solution
Asteroid served as a technical advisor to eSett's management and specialists. We combined service design and technical solution design methodologies, leveraging our extensive experience in best practices across cloud, integration, and application architectures as well as project planning.
This allowed us to take a holistic view of both customer needs and the business and technology frameworks essential to eSett. We operated as a multidisciplinary team, made up of several individuals in various roles from eSett, Asteroid, and our partner network.
Vision and roadmap for data exchange solutions
The project produced validated end customer insights, a goal definition based on those insights, and an evaluation of alternative solution models. The end result was a vision and a prioritized roadmap for a modern data exchange solution, which eSett subsequently proceeded to implement. The updated and expanded customer understanding also supports eSett's other operations.
Preparation of digital channel modernisation
The planning project defined a framework for a digital channel's target state, key requirements, risk management, architecture, and the project's working model. The work laid a clear foundation for decision-making and provided a realistic outlook on the scope and lifecycle of the upcoming reforms. A key priority was to ensure that the preparation was at an appropriate level of detail while allowing full flexibility in the subsequent steps.
Cloud governance model
We extended the cloud environment's governance model with a unified monitoring and logging policy. The work leveraged both cloud platform architectural best practices and extensive real-world experience, combined with eSett's specific requirements. We supported the concrete definition and rollout of the governance model by creating ready-made infrastructure-as-code components and providing hands-on support to the development teams.
Results
The collaboration has strengthened eSett's ability to plan and execute large-scale reforms in a controlled and strategy-driven manner.
For data exchange solutions, we produced a clear, prioritized vision and roadmap along with an architecture blueprint. These have served as a solid foundation for subsequent development work towards a modern, customer-centric solution.
The preparation for the digital channel modernization, in turn, delivered a realistic outlook on the project's scope, architecture, and delivery model – allowing well-founded decision-making combined with full flexibility in the subsequent steps.
In the development of the cloud governance model, eSett gained a concrete logging and monitoring policy along with infrastructure-as-code components to support its rollout. This has resulted in greater control over critical services and increased vendor independence in the development of the overall service landscape.
As a whole, eSett has a more mature customer and technology understanding, and they have access to concrete architectural and implementation plans as well as code-level building blocks. This supports successful product development and ensures the smooth operation of the Nordic electricity markets well into the future.
